I visited Dongdaemun Yupdduk in Flushing, and I was very satisfied with the experience. We ordered Rose Yupdduk, original Yupdduk, rice balls, fried items, Sundae, and skewers, and everything tasted great. Both 떡볶이 had rich flavors, and the sides felt authentic, just like in Korea.
We have been ordering curry from this restaurant for 3+ years now because they are one of the few places that make their own curry rather than use a premade curry roux (RIP, Curry Bo), until now. We ordered our usual today, one spicy and one mild. The moment I took a bite, I knew they had switched to using Golden Curry or something like it. Premade curry roux all has a similar and unmistakable taste (Kim Ga Nae’s curry has the same flavor, which is why we stopped ordering from them). We noticed Yupdduk has been slowly hiking up their prices over the past year or so, but we continued to support them because we loved their house-made curry, which was reminiscent of Go Go Curry’s Kanazawa-style curry. This change is unacceptable to us. Why would I pay for curry I can easily make at home? (A box of Golden Curry roux is about $5, and you can make curry twice with it!) Also, perhaps because they now use a premade curry roux, they have less control over the spice level. The spicy one we ordered tasted extra spicy, while the mild one tasted just as spicy. There seems to be a general trend among Flushing restaurants where they very clearly prioritize cutting costs over preserving quality while jacking up prices. We’re sad that this restaurant has done the same. We’ll miss the delicious dark curry they used to make and mourn the loss of yet another authentic flavor in the neighborhood.
The service was amazing. The staff is very kind and catered to all our needs. The food was delicious. Definitely coming back.
I ordered delivery. This is the first time I've had sundae like this. I've been eating sundae for 40 years. It's truly the worst, but I'm reviewing it for other foreigners. Selling defective sundae, the worst of the worst, is a huge problem and a disappointment to Korean culture. Do business with a clear conscience. (If you quickly thaw and cut it from the freezer, it will look like this.)
So freaking good! I’ve been coming here for years! So please don’t take my spot if it’s busy! (I love eating here!) Best food in Bayside! Prices are great and the taste is unbeatable! I highly recommend it!
