We had Bonjuk twice in Korea Seoul before and we loved it. So when we found out this one is a franchise from the real Bonjuk in Korea we couldn’t wait to give it a try. We are surprised that it’s not that many ppl since it’s opened in a Korean neighborhood. Looks like most Korean still prefer stew or korean bbq. Anyway it’s nice that the restaurant is not crowded. The taste of porridge taste like what we had in Korea. But the portion is way too big. It’s like double the size of Korea and the price is also double as well. The seaweed oyster porridge in Korea is like $11 but here it’s like $21 plus tax and tips so u can imagine it’s quite expensive for a bowl of porridge with like around 8 pieces of small oysters inside. The abalone chicken congee is less flavored than Korea, probably the ingredient like chicken is from usa so it makes sense that it wouldn’t be exactly the same but if u eat it with the side dishes it’s still tasty. So 3 bowls of porridges (seaweed oyster, abalone chicken, bulgogi octopus) and a chicken katsu curry rice is around $114 including tips and tax. It’s truly quite expensive for lunch but it’s still worth to come when craving for porridge. The server is very nice.
Bonjuk is a rice porridge chain from South Korea. I originally started eating rice porridge whenever I was not feeling well, because it was easy to digest and made me feel better, but I have come to crave it even when I'm totally healthy. I had visited the Flushing, Queens branch a few times but this was my first visit to the Fort Lee, New Jersey location. I recently had dental work and was told to eat only soft food. Immediately Juk came to mind. I was warmly greeted upon entering and given barley tea by the server (possibly the 사장님/owner). I told her my concerns about anything crunchy when it came to banchan (side dishes) and she was very understanding and didn't bring anything that would be difficult to chew. I ordered the 참치 야채죽 (Tuna Vegetable Rice Porridge). It was freshly cooked and It tasted perfect. It was as good as the Bonjuk locations I used to visit in Korea (and even better than the Flushing location). It was also easy to eat with my recent dental work. It was so good that I ordered another to go. The presentation was also unique. I loved the cute bear face on top. Atmosphere was fantastic. Super clean and comfortable seating with relaxing background music. My To-Go order was packed with care. I highly recommend this Bonjuk location. Excellent food, service, and atmosphere.
"I ordered three types of porridge today: pumpkin, beef, and abalone. I’ve ordered from this place occasionally and always enjoyed the food. However, today's pumpkin porridge tasted like plain water, so I called the restaurant to inquire about it. They abruptly told me to bring the porridge back for a refund. Typically, in such cases, the kitchen should be checked first. Since I was in the city and would have to pay the toll again, I asked if they could cover the toll fee. At that point, they started getting angry and sarcastic before hanging up on me. When I asked if they were the manager, they confirmed but refused to reveal their name and ended the call. The pumpkin porridge has no flavor at all. It's a place where you just have to eat in silence. I've never seen such a rude employee before.
Nice, warm atmosphere. I ordered a pork katsu curry and it definitely delivered. The coating was a nice crisp, and the curry had a small kick to it. A little pricey but overall worth it! Also, old lady at the counter was very sweet and offered to take me and my family’s picture. :)
This is a really great place for something hot and savory. The service was great. She was so nice and accommodating. The food was delicious. I got the vegetables rice portage and it was wonderful.
