Today, on Monday, August 21, 2023, my flight on Japan Airlines #72 from Tokyo International Airport (also perhaps better known as Haneda International Airport) was a remarkably smooth journey. Check-in was smooth and uneventful inspite of one overweight, large Samsonite suitcase. Some contents were removed and placed in another carryon bag. All-in-all, check-in proceeded without a hitch. And, the cabin crew was courteous, always smiling, with prompt smooth service. YOU are the BEST. And, the red wine, dinner and dessert were spectacular. PLEASE SEE the accompanying pictures!!! PLEASE NOTE that Japan Airlines is one of the leading sponsors of the annual mid-March Honolulu Festival.

It’s been a minute since I’ve been on this side of HNL. Our 2024 vacation to Japan is the reason for the return! Our bags from OGG were automatically transferred so all we had to do was check in at the gate counter. The plane was a Boeing 787-9, not too big, not too small but just right. We normally fly first or biz, but due to our late booking, we got stuck in steerage, I mean coach, which wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. Seating was 2-4-2 with ample leg room. We received a delish welcome snack (arare), dinner (teri chicken & rice or mushroom cream pasta), snack with dessert (tuna sand & Haagen Dazs ice cream) and all the drinks our hearts desired. The movies were lacking though, very dated and not plentiful, so definitely download your own! Power outlets are beneath all seats. SERVICE: Asian airline service is second to none, from the counter, to the flight attendants and everyone else involved. Take note, America. Yeah, right… OVERALL: Your best option for travel to The Land of the Rising Sun.

We flew Japan Airlines flight JL072 from Tokyo to Honolulu on April 6, 2025, with our 1-year-3-month-old daughter. After receiving clear approval from JAL customer service to use a “Lucky Carrot” inflatable baby bed, we purchased it and booked a seat for our baby. Despite this prior approval, the cabin crew on JL072 contradicted the guidance mid-flight, first demanding we rotate the baby’s position, then later banning the bed entirely. What was even more shocking: at one point, a short-haired crew member came over and shined a flashlight directly at our sleeping baby’s face, and lifted the blanket off her without our permission. This was not only intrusive, but completely unacceptable behavior toward an infant. At around 1:00 AM, while our baby had been sleeping peacefully for over two hours, three flight attendants forcibly removed the baby and the bed without consent, waking her up in panic. We asked for their names, and only one of them was provied, named Okamoto. Our daughter has since woken up screaming every night — something that had never happened before. The crew’s handling of a sleeping infant was traumatizing. We do not recommend flying JAL and will never fly JAL again. JAL乗務員による乳児への不当対応 – JL072便での体験

I was traveling back to Portland from Japan with my 2-year-old. We had a connecting flight to PDX in Honolulu. When we were at Baggage Claim trying to figure out how to drop off our 4 suitcases and car seat, I asked the Japan Airlines ground crew for some help (of course, I was willing to pay some tips), but she was very rude. So, I had to ask a different ground crew for help. Having been a ground crew member for 3 years in Japan, such behavior would never be tolerated in my company.

My wife and I took the connecting flight JL784 from Narita International Airport to Honolulu on 3 February 2023. The flight was smooth, and the services provided by the crew were excellent. The crew was hardworking, dedicated, and committed to rendering good service to passengers. The meals were good and did not disappoint either. We were impressed with the level of services provided in comparison with an earlier flight from Kuala Lumpur to Narita, also with Japan Airlines.
